The Art Behind Still Life Photography

Many people believe that still life photography was originated within the romanticism of conventional mode of painting. The inherent meaning of still life itself perceives a basic picture of natural world in relation to a higher degree of scenic experience. The beginning

Still life paintings became a popular fine art around the 17th century. They have rich and unique application of texture, lively colors, and an excellent touch of shadowing. In this period, painting scenes focused on wealth theme, such as expensive foods served on the table complete with precious wine and people wearing fine and expensive clothes. Salvador Dali and Cezanne have done various experiments to rise beyond traditional limitation of painting.

Similar as painting, still life photography started with simple, non-abstract, and uncomplicated pictures. The photographers did special rendering and treatments to make the pictures unique. Andre Kertesz and Man Ray were the ones who developed still life photography to a new extent.

Start with a blank canvas

This is another similarity between painting and photography. The process of still life photography is also started from a blank canvas, similar to the painting. It starts with no scratch on it and then it is developed by illustrating the scene from the real life. Textures, shapes, colors, and tones are added to give certain characters to the photographs. Photographers use lighting arrangement technique to create a higher level photography. Printing the final results also needs darkroom skills so the photographs will have a good quality as intended.

The application of still life photography

In general, the elements that are used in still life photography are not dynamic. If you learn about its techniques, you will find out about the importance of camera view and camera perspective. In addition, you will learn various aspects related to composition, lighting arrangement, color balance, and contrast. Basically, still life photography is a combination of these aspects to create a unique and special final outcome. The application of still life photography is varied greatly, such as advertising, covers, catalogues, brochures, and many other aspects as virtually everything can become the subject of this field.
